98 sls motor mounts - Cadillac Forum

My 98 sls motor mounts are worn. Not sure if all are bad but i understand i should change all. The 2 in front dont look bad to change. I ve never changed these but normally can figure it out. someone with experience please help with a step by step replacement guide. I haven't gotten under car to locate the back mount but reading in hear makes me want to have the shop replace this one. need some good advise on this one. Thanks

lots of tork with these engines... im guessing the bad one is the back one.... usuallly, it goes. if the others arnt broken..... dont fix'm
also you will need something to support engine while changing. good luck

Front mount is the likely the failed mount. To replace in you driveway not recommended. To replace You will quality set of jack stands, Full size 21/2 ton floor jack, and level surface. Jack front of car up as far as possible. Place jack stands under frame rail portion of under body. Disconnect front position sensors from lower control arms. Remove lower mount retaining nuts, brake line retaining brackets, and any shielding attached to front of sub-frame. Reposition jack under front cross beam of sub-frame. Remove front sub-frame to body bolts(2) loosen rear (4) bolts. Lower front of sub-frame just enough for studs on mount to clear sub-frame. IF SUB-FRAME IS LOWERED TOO FAR INTERMEDIATE SHAFT FOR STEERING CAN PULL APART( NO STEERING AND BIG HEADACHE TO REPAIR!) Remove retaining nut holding mount to bracket and remove mount. Reverse to install. If in doubt at all find experienced help or take to shop.

I did this job twice to my car. Once a mechanic, the other myself. The secondtime i did it on a lift at the old ford dealer used to work at. Nice amount time here for this job. also very delicate compents as slowroll mentioned. But take your time if doing it and you should be okay. Little tough for a driveay job thou...

Thanks a lot guys, tough decesion to make, what kind of price can I expect, to change just the back or just the front or all of them. Any clues will be appreciated.

When i first found my was broke, had minor thought it was the mount so had service writer "just feel it" through gear change rev etc..after he mentioned the front mount he said would be like 600 at caddy. Thats crazy. So i found a mechanic by my house, he did it for 120 and i brought him the mount ($100). (on floor in front of his shop fr what i saw). Then 2nd time did myself..paid 100 for the front mount.
