you can use an aftermarket one as long as it is for the car you are driving. all the after market ones do is allow more air to pass through at the same time its doing its job.

sounds like yours is getting clogged .. not uncommon after 7 years .. how many miles?

also, in some cases where the hydrocarbons are excessive, a good muffler shop will install a larger unit .. larger meaning more reactive surface to ignite/burn off the HC's ...

please stick to one thread per subject .. multi posting with the same subject does not help us help you.

i dont see why you must pay any more than a couple $100 bills .. did you take it to a specialty muffler shop? forget the Midas and such chains ...

here in So CA, the toughest emissions State, the muffler shops know what it takes to pass the tests .. they will advice and often guarantee the work to meet emissions standards.

as an example, my Allante had some emission issues, failed SMOG with high Nitrous - took it into the local muffler shop and they decided that the car now needed something a little better than the stock .. cost me $125 plus install .. passed test.

i have no clue what they installed, all i know it passes test.

shops like Midas and such, will only install cats and mufflers by their books .. useless shops when your car needs an extra something.
